About 'Piglets Choice'
The Award winning ‘Piglets Choice’ was created by a Local Family in Somerset, who wanted to bring the age old traditional cider back to life.
Piglet’s cider was just a dream to start with, we knew what we wanted to produce but the process to get started was a long one.
In 2010 we made the decision to have a go at making our own cider, the same cider you see today. It wasn’t easy though, there were a few thing we needed to do to get started.
Once we had decided on our trees, we then had to plant them. In 2010 we set out to plant all our trees in the 11acre orchard. Once they were all planted, we then had to make sure they grew and developed as a cider apple tree should.
After a couple of seasons and a lot of testing, the apples were finally ready for the next step.
Collecting them was the most back braking thing we’ve ever done and still to this day is quite challenging. Once the apples and pears are collected, they are washed through our washing plant and ready for milling.
From here the magic begins, setting the crushed apples into the pouches for pressing. Watching the natural fresh juice pour from the press, into the collection tank was the best feeling.
Piglets Choice and Piglets Perry is picked and pressed in the county of Somerset. Using 100% Vintage cider apples and pears in the age old traditional method.
Most of the fruit is hand picked from our own orchards at Nempnett Thrubwell. Watching and waiting for the correct time to pick the fruit is part of the process.
The rare Perry pears come from the next village, where the old trees are 108 years old and the size of giant oak trees. When collecting the pears by hand last year, Debbie my partner was mildly concussed having many land on her from a great height.
Debbie was not amused, as they are the size of a cricket ball and as heavy. I’ve been told I’ll be collecting them from now on, I’ll make sure to wear the correct hat for the job.
Our Fruit is maintained and constantly looked after, free from any sprays or pesticides. This produces what we think is the purest form of fruit we can use.
All our freshly picked fruit undergoes a strict process ensuring we pick and use the best fruit for our Cider & Perry.
Once the fresh juice is collected it then goes into the fermenting tanks, this is where the real magic happens. After some time its then bottled and labeled ready for you to enjoy.
There are some really rare varieties within our orchard like ‘Claret’ and ‘Helens Green’, making our Perry unique in flavour. Winning us multi awards with Camra and other festivals.
The latest award we won one was first for our Piglets Perry at Winchester Beer Festival this year. With the accolade of our first place award we aim to achieve this award for many more years.
We wanted to produce the best Cider & Perry available when we started. After lots of hard work, we’ve achieved a number of awards in acknowledgement of our efforts.
Winning three 1st place awards for our Perry and Cider was the greatest reward we could of asked for. Then in 2017 we received news that our Piglets Perry was voted ‘The Best Perry In The Nation’, this was amazing and inspired us to continue doing what we do best.
Making real Perry and Cider is what we wanted to do and now were doing it. These awards are great to have but the biggest and best award is the feedback we get from all our customers.
This is truly the best award we can ask for, knowing that our customers love the cider we know so well as Piglets Cider & Perry.
We would like to thank you all that drink and rate our Cider and Perry.
